Hot Springs County History &
Wind River Canyon Geology Tour
A double geologic delight! And, a photographic must.
First, we'll explore the bubbling wonders of the Big Springs, discover how the unique geology of
the nearby Owl Creeks shaped this striking landscape, marvel at the remnants of extinct geysers,
and admire the dramatic travertine terraces and cooling ponds. We'll cross the famous Swinging
Bridge. We will also learn the story of a historic treaty with Chief Washakie about these
legendary hot springs. Then, our adventure continues to the equally extraordinary Wind River
Canyon.
Wind River Canyon is a breathtaking natural wonder, dazzling visitors in every season. It’s one
of North America’s rare places where you can experience an epic sweep of geologic history right
before your eyes. Towering canyon walls soar more than 1,000 feet above the river, creating a
dramatic backdrop for our journey. The significance of this landscape draws geology students
from across the country for field study. As we travel through the canyon, you’ll discover ancient
rock formations, learn how the river carved its way through the Owl Creek Mountains, and see
how these forces shaped the famous Hot Springs in Thermopolis. We’ll reveal how to spot
geologic faults, uncover the engineering feats behind the road and railroad, and share the colorful
tales behind names like Wind River-Big Horn River and Wedding of the Waters, as well as
stories of early fur trappers.
Finally, we will stop at the Boysen Lake Marina, where you can get ice cream or a bite to eat.
Then we swing back through the canyon, where you try out your new skills or simply relax as we
pass through the spectacular wonders of the canyon.
A bottle of water and snack are provided. Lunch is on your own at the Marina, if desired. Be sure to bring your camera!

Hot Springs State Park & Legend Rock Petroglyphs Tour
Legend Rock State Park boasts world-renowned petroglyphs—remarkably easy to visit, yet a
hidden treasure within Wyoming’s borders. For years, archaeologists and students of the early
Native Americans have been drawn to uncover the mysteries etched into its ancient stones.
Stretching for 1,300 feet, this band of sunburned rock displays more than 90 panels with over
300 ancient petroglyphs. These prehistoric carvings reveal a fascinating gallery of life: elk, deer,
bison, rabbits, enigmatic humans, and mesmerizing geometric patterns all wait to be discovered.
Our expert guides will help you spot hidden gems among the glyphs and share the stories behind
them. When you need a break, you can relax at one of the shaded picnic tables or stop by the
visitor center and restrooms conveniently located near the parking area.
We Start at Hot Springs State Park, making a loop through the buffalo pasture to search bison
and their new calves and then head out to the Petroglyph site. Along the way, we’ll also share
